Be a Business – Act like a Business
We just got home on the red eye last night and I do what I normally do, hang out on Twitter and Facebook and check out whats going on while waiting at Airports. (Spelling and grammar police go away.. I have been up for over 24 hours)
What seem to explode in all channels is that craig list ad from a bride talking about how expensive wedding photography is. (and marathon boudoir sessions.. but that is another story)
This seems to just give other photographers the chance to vent a little, which is cool.. but the follow up blog posts I have read have been painful. If you want to be treated as a business I think you need to act like one first. No one cares you edited the photos on a 27 inch iMac or shot with 18 Canon Mark II’s..or need money to pay for your car lease. I can’t think of another business/industry that gets so defensive they have to justify personal food and entertainment budgets.
If your shopping for a lawyer and you think he charges too much.. does he list all of his expenses.. cost of education and try to convert you and the world? Do other lawyers around the country get up in arms and spend time tying to mass educate (basically) other lawyers why they change what they do? I have not seen it.
This one person in the ad did not understand, sure its shared by many more. If you do charge what she quotes.. then move on. Instead of spending time trying to educate the world about the costs of running a photography business.. go out and target the ones that know.. and maybe do your best to convert people as they cross your path as real potential clients. You might have extra time to progress your skills. What matters most to your clients. (+ the greatest way to justify your costs)
I do get this.. I deal with this all the time. Is it frustrating at times. Yep.
.. but business goes on. Be a business.. act like a business and maybe this mass justification of being a photographer and running a photography business will just go away on it’s own over time.
